English Theatre in Paris

From the second floor looking out from théaatre Châtelet

Musical productions and english theatre are alive and well in Paris. Through April you can see the magical performance of Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods at the théaatre Châtelet de Paris

This is a fairy tale-themed musical. The music and songs are by Stephen Sondheim and the book is by James Lapine. It is about the experiences of various familiar fairy-tale and fable characters that are interwoven and centered on going “into the woods” with the goal of gaining their wishes and desires. The lyrics are whimsical and witty.

The musical debuted in San Diego at the Old Globe Theatre in 1986 and premiered on Broadway in 1987 with Bernadette Peters as the Witch. Into the Woods won several Tony Awards and it has been produced regularly since its inception 28 years ago.

The musical director for the Paris production is David Charles Abell, the set designer is Lee Blakeley and choreography is done by Lorena Randi. Cinderella is performed by Kimy McLaren and the witch is played by Beverley Klein. The entire cast is exceptional and they deserve many accolades.

The théaatre Châtelet is itself a work of art and is one of two theatres built on the site of a châtelet in the mid eighteen hundreds.  It is designed by Gabriel Davious at the request of Baron Haussmann. Since 1979 it has been operated by the City of Paris. It underwent upgrades and remodeling in l980 and l989.

The théaatre Châtelet de Paris is located at 2 rue Edouard Colonne, 75001 Paris. You can go the the website to buy tickets: http://chatelet-theatre.com/2013-2014/
